Which type
Most disappointment with a new boiler comes from fitting the wrong type, not from fitting it badly. Here is the honest version of each.
No cylinder, no tank, hot water on demand. Suits most one-bathroom houses and flats and it is the least disruptive swap if you already have one. The hard limit is that it cannot feed two outlets properly at the same time, so a second shower will always lose.
Stores hot water in an unvented cylinder so several outlets run together at mains pressure. The right answer for two or more bathrooms. Costs more, needs cupboard space, and is the only thing that genuinely fixes a shower that dies when a tap runs.
Cylinder plus a tank, usually in the loft. Often the sensible option in older Sheffield stone properties where the radiators and pipework suit it and converting would mean opening up half the house for little gain.
The install
Radiators counted, bathrooms counted, mains flow rate measured at the tap. That sizes a boiler — not the badge on the old one.
Boiler, flue, filter, controls, labour and making good, itemised. No day rates and no creeping extras.
Drained, disconnected and removed. Back boilers, fires and loft tanks taken out where the job needs it.

Back boilers
Tucked behind a gas fire in the chimney breast, fitted decades ago, and still running in a surprising number of houses. They are inefficient, parts are increasingly hard to find, and when one finally goes it takes the heating and the hot water with it.

A locked out boiler is usually protecting itself, and what tripped it is often a part rather than the whole appliance. Diagnosis first, recommendation second.

By counting radiators and bathrooms and measuring the incoming mains flow rate at a tap. Not by matching what is already on the wall, which is how the wrong one got fitted in the first place. Oversized boilers short-cycle and wear out; undersized ones never keep up.
More than a swap. The fire and surround come out, the boiler comes out of the chimney breast, the opening is dealt with, the new boiler goes somewhere sensible, and pipework gets re-run to suit. Often the flue and the gas supply need attention as well. We survey it properly and quote the whole thing rather than the easy half.
Often yes, and in a back boiler removal it usually has to. It depends where the flue can terminate legally, whether the gas supply can carry it, and where the condensate can drain. All three get checked at survey.
Frequently not, and this is worth knowing before you spend the money. Cold radiators are usually sludge or balancing, which are system problems. A new boiler on the same dirty system heats the same rooms and leaves the same ones cold.
Not automatically. A reasonably clean system may only need a chemical cleanse and a filter. One with black water and cold-bottomed radiators needs a proper flush. We look at the system water rather than selling it as standard.
It varies by manufacturer and model, and nearly all of them require the installation to be registered and the boiler serviced annually. We register it for you and tell you plainly what the terms actually require, because a lapsed service voids more warranties than faults do.
A straight swap is a day with the water off for part of it. A back boiler removal or a system conversion is two to three days with more mess, and we will tell you which rooms are affected before we start rather than after.
